A NEW BOOKLET ON CARDIGAN

Dyfed Archaeological Trust has recently published a lavishly illustrated booklet on the history and topography of Cardigan. The booklet is available from the Trust at £4.00 including postage and packing.

Cardigan celebrates its 900th year in 2010. This booklet tells the story of the development of Cardigan town from its origins as a medieval frontier town in the Anglo-Norman/Welsh wars, the foundation of its religious sites and the iconic status of the castle, as the home of the Lord Rhys and birthplace of the Eisteddfod, through to the present.

Today the town continues to change and develop. The management of this change is a challenge to both planners and residents. It requires a balance between the protection of the historic fabric of the town that gives Cardigan its distinctive character and the demands of development for the future benefit of its citizens.

To meet this challenge, Ceredigion County Council (with support from the Cadwgan Buildings Preservation Trust, National Lottery and EU funding) and Cadw commissioned The Dyfed Archaeological Trust to prepare a detailed historic town survey to provide a framework for sustainable development within the town’s historic centre, and to help secure the future protection of its irreplaceable archaeological and historical heritage by highlighting the value of the past as an asset for the future.

With joint funding from the Spirit of the Miners Initiative and Cadw, Dyfed Archaeological Trust have recently completed production of a free booklet presenting the history of the lead mining industry in upland Ceredigion. The booklet, which is intended to inform local communities, landowners and visitors to the area, about the surviving metal mining heritage of the region, includes advice on the protection and conservation of mine sites, information on places to visit, mining heritage organisations and sources of further advice and support.

A 32 page full-colour booklet telling the story of Carmarthen Castle has been published with funding from Carmarthenshire County Council. The booklet is available from outlets in Carmarthen.

The production of this booklet follows the detailed historic town survey undertaken by the Trust on behalf of Carmarthenshire County Council and Cadw. The aim was to provide a framework for sustainable development within the town’s historic environment, and to help secure the future of this irreplaceable archaeological and historic heritage.

The bilingual booklet highlights the rich historic and archaeological heritage of Carmarthen. The title reflects the fact that Carmarthen has been continuously occupied since the Romans founded the town in the early 2nd century AD. The book describes the growth of the two medieval settlements of Old and New Carmarthen between AD 1100 and 1500 and the Post Medieval expansion after 1500.

The booklet also demonstrates how historic documentation and maps, archaeological evidence and the modern street plan can be used to build our knowledge of Carmarthen’s past. It also acts as an historic summary of the more detailed survey and includes information on recent archaeological discoveries in the town.

The production has been supported by grants from Carmarthenshire County Council and Cadw. It contains numerous colour illustrations, including historic reconstructions by Neil Ludlow and original photographs by Ray Edgar.
