A NEW BOOKLET
ON CARDIGAN
Dyfed Archaeological Trust has recently published
a lavishly illustrated booklet on the history and topography
of Cardigan. The booklet is available from the Trust at £4.00
including postage and packing.
Cardigan celebrates its 900th year in 2010.
This booklet tells the story of the development of Cardigan
town from its origins as a medieval frontier town in the Anglo-Norman/Welsh
wars, the foundation of its religious sites and the iconic
status of the castle, as the home of the Lord Rhys and birthplace
of the Eisteddfod, through to the present.
Today the town continues to change and develop.
The management of this change is a challenge to both planners
and residents. It requires a balance between the protection
of the historic fabric of the town that gives Cardigan its
distinctive character and the demands of development for the
future benefit of its citizens.
To meet this challenge, Ceredigion County
Council (with support from the Cadwgan Buildings Preservation
Trust, National Lottery and EU funding) and Cadw commissioned
The Dyfed Archaeological Trust to prepare a detailed historic
town survey to provide a framework for sustainable development
within the town’s historic centre, and to help secure
the future protection of its irreplaceable archaeological
and historical heritage by highlighting the value of the past
as an asset for the future.
